Artist Statement:
In my work I use juxtaposition as a visual and conceptual tool to explore the African American
millennial cultural identity through figuration. My paintings amplify the diversity of Black
perspectives and that Black identities are more complex, nuanced, and abundant than their
traditional representations. My subjects, usually photographed by myself or inspired by social
media posts, combined with allegorical cultural, political, and historical elements forces the
viewer to scrutinize their own subconscious perceptions in order to interpret the work.
