HISTORY
The 621 Gallery was orignally established in 1981 and later incorporated in 1989 as a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization. The governing force of the 621 Gallery consists of a Board of Directors with officers that rotate yearly. These members include artists, faculty members from Florida State University, Tallahassee Community College, and Florida A & M University, and members of the Tallahassee Community that are interested in contemporary art.
The 621 Gallery is committed to providing contemporary art, artists, and ideas to the Tallahassee Area and well as the North Florida and South Georgia regions. We rely heavily on volunteers from our board, members, and art community. Without them, the gallery would not be able to carry on. Please join us by becoming a member, supporter, artist or volunteer, and help bring the best in contemporary art to our community.
NAN BOYNTON MEMORIAL GALLERY
Nan Boynton Memorial Gallery is located within The 621 Gallery. The Gallery is dedicated to the memory of Nan Boynton, original founder of Railroad Square and 621. Her vision of a community of artists living and working together became Railroad Square, the commercial and residential park in Tallahassee devoted to the arts. Ms. Boynton passed away in 2002. Her son and daughter carry on the business of Railroad Square, and have donated space for 621 in honor of their mother’s vision.
Hosting more than 80 studios, galleries and small shops, Railroad Square is the creative haven of many Tallahassee artists and other small businesses. Railroad Square operates at its own quaint pace most of the month and then puts on the city’s most exciting “First Friday Gallery Hop” on the first Friday of each month. Visit Railroad Square and you’ll find a thriving art park filled with galleries, working studios, shops and the only café in town that is built out of a real railroad caboose. Visit their website today for more information. www.railroadsquare.com
ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE
The Artist-in-Residence @ 621 is a nominated position on the Board of Directors for The 621 Gallery. The artist’s term is for one year but can be extended for a second year upon approval by the Board. The artist-in-residence is required to work each Sunday afternoon at 621 and in return gets free gallery space located on the back side of 621. The artist-in-residence studio is usually open for each First Friday Gallery Hop. Come check out our current Artist-in-Residence, John Lytle Wilson!
Artist-in-Residence Bio:
John Lytle Wilson not only paints animals, but also robots. After growing up in Rock Hill, South Carolina, John mastered his techniques at Florida State University and Birmingham-Southern College. He has a national exhibition record and has been featured in several online magazines and print publications. John is an Instructor at Florida State and Valdosta State Universities.
Family and friends call him John. He uses his middle name, “Lytle” only to distinguish himself from the tens of thousands of other John Wilsons out there (if you find yourself needing to say it, Lytle rhymes with “title” not “spittle”). While fine people, it would not be good to be confused with John Wilson the astrologer or John Wilson the large game hunter. It would be pretty cool if he were mistaken for John Wilson the game show host or John Wilson the ninja.
When not working in the studio, John avoids mowing the lawn and doing the dishes. He enjoys firecrackers, macaroni and cheese, and riding very, very small bicycles.
